About AgroEcoAdvisor

An evidence-grounded advisor that ranks agroecological practices for a specific place in Ethiopia and shows the field studies behind every recommendation.

Open the Advisor

What it is

AgroEcoAdvisor reads the agro-ecological context under a map pin (rainfall, temperature, altitude, slope, soil and growing period from a 250 m geospatial stack). It ranks practices with a model trained on thousands of paired with/without field observations from Ethiopian trials, and checks each one against the effects measured in published studies from similar areas. The retrieval layer then explains each recommendation with passages from those studies.

How the advisor decides

For each practice, the strongest evidence for your location leads and the other sources support it. The label on each result tells you which one leads.

  • Model-led

The field-trial model leads when its confidence is medium or high and it has trials from your zone. The headline is the model estimate for your area.

  • Study-led

Where the model has little local data, the effect measured in published field studies leads, taken from the closest match: your zone, a similar area or similar rainfall.

  • Documented

Practices described in guidance or practice records, without a measured effect for your objective, are listed with their sources and never with a number.

  • When sources disagree

If the model and the studies point in opposite directions or differ widely, the advisor shows the range instead of one number and says so.

How to read confidence

This is a ranking tool, not a yield forecaster. Each result shows how strong its evidence is, so trust the order of practices more than the exact percentages.

  • High confidence

well supported by field trials in settings like yours

  • Medium confidence

reasonable evidence; treat the order as the signal

  • Thin evidence

a starting point, not a forecast; the advisor says so plainly

Data sources

  • Field-trial evidence

Evidence for Resilient Agriculture (ERA): the Ethiopia subset of paired field observations, with the Adimassu et al. climate-smart agriculture studies. The effect of each study is computed from the same dataset.

  • Geospatial layers

WorldClim climate, SoilGrids soil, Copernicus elevation and slope, ESA WorldCover land cover, FAO growing-period data, and the Ethiopian agro-ecological belts.

  • Implementation guidance

GARDIAN / CGSpace implementation guidance (CGIAR knowledge products) for the how-to layer.

  • Planned

    Practice records

WOCAT Global SLM Database practice records (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0), for cross-country context in a later release.
